The Month That Was April 2009

This month saw the remembrance of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ and His Resurrection onto Life, days traditionally remembered on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The Good News message of Easter was the only Good News April had to offer, but it is also the most important news of all.

April saw the continuing saga over MP's expenses, from bath plugs to pornography, from second home allowances to attendance fees, from power to greed, the British House of Commons now sits disgraced in the eyes of a nation struggling to make ends meet, struggling to keep body and soul together, struggling to understand the greed that drives those we have elected across the nation. Not one ounce of regret or remorse and the endless denials to the accusations that they have acted in bad faith. Belfast news on the matter was suspiciously quiet as the debate widened to include Northern Ireland's MPs. Peter Robinson and his wife Iris, were branded as the Swiss Family Robinson and in turn blamed the Ulster Unionist Party for their bad press.

July will be a telling time for our politicians when their expenses are listed under Freedom of Information and the public are able to see what they have claimed on our behalf. The publication could be catastrophic from some MPs, already under fire for double jobbing and employing their relatives. With MPs who are MLAs, who are Government Ministers or who sit on Councils and Committees, who run private companies and employ relatives at public expense, our politicians could see a backlash unseen before in Northern Ireland politics.

Other news in April included Japanese research that suggests that Drinking water which contains the element lithium may reduce the risk of suicide. Why a nation would consider such an experiment beggars belief considering that nature of the drug they are playing with. The Japanese public must be well pleased that in such trying times their money is wasted in such a way.

In political news the former Homes Secretary Charles Clarke told the nation that he was ashamed to be a Labour MP, but your too late Charles the British nation was sick to death of Labour MPs, long before your change of heart, as week by week, there seems to be no depth to which they won't sink.

A prime example of Labour hypocrisy this month was their treatment of the Gurkhas, brave men who fought for this nation, now having to fight an expensive legal battle with the very people they fought to protect. With the Labour Government so out of touch with public opinion and reality, the opposition leaders David Cameron and Nick Clegg were able to board a bandwagon, kept going by the tireless efforts of one of our favourite actresses Joanna Lumley. Who stepped up to the plate long before there was a photo opportunity in it. Even with the Labour Government having been defeated in their motion against the Gurkhas, the Labour Government shows little signs of decency, waiting rather than acting, delaying rather than seizing the moment and actually thanking these Fine British Troops for their brave efforts. Gordon Brown's and his Labour Government continue their lonely walk towards a Labour Party trend of political suicide.

Finally, April also saw Belfast City Airport (George Best Belfast City Airport) hit the Belfast News Headlines again, as they band passengers from being dropped off at the Terminal Entrance. Belfast City Airport stated that the new measure is to prevent a terrorist attack similar to that at Glasgow Airport in June 2007. However, many are skeptical of the move as the airport is still to allow Belfast City Airport Taxis Ltd who operate from the site, the facility to pick up passengers from the door by surcharging the passengers £1. Is it a money making exercise as some have suggested, is it a play on our fears over terrorism, is it a case of restricted practice as only airport based taxis will be facilitated, time will tell, but one thing is for sure, the reputation of Belfast City Airport appears to be deteriorating on the daily basis and soon Belfast could be demanding that government act against it.
